The Link Between Obesity and Diabetes

Being overweight or obese increases the chances of developing the common type of diabetes, type 2 diabetes. In this disease, the body makes enough insulin but the cells in the body have become resistant to the salutary action of insulin.


This has over the Years become so serious that the WHO had Diabetes declared into en epidemic.

Moreover, it was estimated that the number of adults with diabetes in the world had increased from 108 million in 1980 to 422 million in 2014 (28.5% due to the rise in prevalence, 39.7% due to population growth and ageing, and 31.8% due to interaction of these two factors). Besides the growth and aging of the world population in general, the global obesity epidemic has turned out to be a key factor for the rise of diabetes incidence together with the immense progress of multifactorial cardiovascular risk management and successful revascularisation therapy of people with diabetes also contributing to the expansion of the worldwide diabetes population.


In addition to overt diabetes, the IDF Atlas estimates another352.1 million (95% CI 233.5 -577.3 million) people worldwide to have a pre-stage of diabetes, called Impaired Glucose Tolerance (IGT), a figure which is anticipated to rise to 531.6 million (95% CI 353.8-883.9 million) in 2045.

All these pointers show us that we have to take action now. Especially given the current threat from Covid-19, which threatens the lives of people with obesity and diabetes.


Many of you will think, where do I start?


The first step is to analyze your diet and you shouldn't do this alone. Drastic and uncontrolled changes can also affect your health. We have to work strategically and in a controlled manner on changing the diet. We also have to analyze what we buy where (please refer to the article "The Grocery Store Today").

The second important aspect is our physical activity. There is and must be a balance between our diet and our physical activity. You can start with moderate physical activity. Our mental strength also plays a big role, because the way to achieve the goals requires a lot of discipline and character.
